On my recent trip to California, I was lucky enough to stay in Venice Beach. It was a lovely experience, where thanks to Airbnb, I was able to live out this dream of staying in a cute house right off the beach with hot skaters and surfers all over (the neighborhood, not the apartment).
The Venice Beach area was perfect for me. It had the 3 B’s: beach, bars, and boys. One of the first bars I hit up was The Venice Whaler. I guess it’s technically a restaurant, but I sat at the upstairs bar which overlooked the ocean because the beach was right there. The drinks were awesome, strong and tasty. The food was stellar… more specifically their Chowder Fries. And for boys, well I sat next to this guy Pete, with a dope man bun and a cute Cali smile. He even followed our FlyGirl Insta account – swoon!
Let me back track for a minute. Chowder Fries. After ordering them I didn’t really know what to expect – would the fries be soggy, would the chowder over power everything? When I was finally presented with a plate of them (and fish tacos that were also good) their beauty took my breath away. They glistened in the sun light, smothered in clam chowder and bacon and once I took my first bite my life has never been the same. It was so damn good! I do not have words to articulate the mouth orgasm I had. Just make a mental note if you ever find yourself in Venice, go to The Whaler and buy the fries!
I returned to The Whaler a second time before leaving Venice, this time ordering from their takeout window because I was half dead from hiking the Hollywood Sign. I opted for their Amber’s Fried Chicken Sandwich, that came complete with cheddar, bacon, a fried egg, jalapeño slaw, and pickles. It was phenomenal. I also ordered a juice which was made of pineapple, mint, and ginger. It was really good and even better when I spiked with it some gin.
Overall The Venice Whaler was a lovely, tasty note during my Cali getaway. One that left a lasting impression with its serving of great food and chill Cali vibes. Not many places can deliver good scores on the 3 B’s, but Venice and The Venice Whaler came through and now my heart wails for those chowder fries until the next time.
